The Magna Carta became known as one ofthe first documents to ever reduce the powerof a king. Without boundaries, a ruler willabuse his power over the people. So inorder for a ruler to govern a nation powerfulhe must have laws and boundaries to follow. The Magna Carta was the first document tostart a lawful monarchy in England. Theneed for this document was because KingJohn had taxed, mis-governed and neglectedthe peoples rights until the barons, in particular Stephan han gton, forced him tosign the Magna Carta on June 15,1215. TheMagna Carta contained sixty-three articlescovering many topics such as the rights andliberties of the church, financial concerns,royal courts and the treasury, the sharing ofpower between the king and barons, and thekings family with his subjects. TheMagna Carta stated We have also grantedto all assoil men of our realm, on the part ofourselves and our heirs forever all thesubjoined liberties, to have and to hold, tothem and to the heirs, from us and from ourheirs.
