Tracking the Fangle in Newfangled
Tracking the Fangle in Newfangled Tracking the Fangle in Newfangled Tracking the Fangle in Newfangled By Maeve Maddox Until I saw the word fangled used humorously in a couple of blogs, Id never given any thought to the elements of newfangled. Can something be oldfangled, or just plain fangled? Come to find out, the fangled part of newfangled is a fossil from Old English. For those of you unfamiliar with the word, the meaning usually understood by newfangled is Newly or recently invented or existent, novel; gratuitously or objectionably modern or different from what one is used to. OED Ex. My grandmother refuses to use anything so newfangled as a cell phone. The word newfangled, with the sense of addicted to novelty/ready to grasp at new things, is first recorded about 1470. The sense lately come into fashion occurs in 1533. The Old English verb fon (to capture, seize, take) had the past participle form gefangen. Not only does this old verb give us the fangle in newfangled, it gives us the word fang. with the sense of sharp tooth. Makes sense: something with fangs can seize with them. NOTE: Another O.E. word, fengto, meant a catching- or grasping-tooth. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Marine ecosystems Florida Keys Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Marine ecosystems Florida Keys - Assignment Example The environment specialist gave an insight on the importance of the environment as a habitat for other animals and for human health. The insight acted as guidance to how we treated the environment at the place for the next three weeks. The park had two laboratories. One dealt with research on marine plants while the other dealt with research on marine animals. In the plant laboratory, I learnt how to operate the modern microscopes. The lab technicians were very helpful in helping us identify the adaptation characteristics of the plants. I was able to see some of the biology facts that I had learnt theoretically. The technicians introduce us to marine crop improvement which was done through numerous tests. At that particular time, the technicians were doing research on improving the green algae plant. Their major aim was to reduce its growth period and increase its adaptation in being a habitat for certain small sea animals (Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary retrieved from http://www.q2lschool.org/ecosystem/popeco/ecoscenario/drytort/index.html). I worked as an assistant lab technician which led me discovering the adaptation of the algae plant. The animal laboratory was very busy and with many technicians. They had many sea animal specimens which we dissected so as to understand their body features. We dissected different types of fish, and we were able to identify and compare various organs. To test on our understanding capabilities, we were given simple test to dissect crabs and remove certain organs. We were required to describe the adaptability of different features such as how the feet were adapted to movement in water. The project about the crab also required us to identify the different kinds of foods that crab feed on. From my research, I learnt that crabs are omnivorous and they feed on algae and small seas animals such as molluscs and worms. In the laboratory, what amazed me most was the diverse features of

What was Socrates accused of and why What can we learn about Athenia Essay
What was Socrates accused of and why What can we learn about Athenia the outcome - Essay Example Socrates was accused by Meletus of two crimes, namely that he was guilty ââ¬Å"of corrupting the young and of not believing in the gods in whom the city believesâ⬠. This means that there were both moral and religious reasons behind the charges brought against them. A closer analysis of the documents written by Plato reveals, however, that these two charges reveal a great deal about the state of Athenian democracy at that time, and they demonstrate how much of a danger Socrates and his teaching represented to those in power. The first charge of corrupting the young relates to the habit that Socrates had of gathering his pupils around him and engaging in long discussions about a wide range of subjects. His method of teaching was to construct dialogues with his pupils, urging them to question everything and use their minds to think through the issues of the day and their implications. He did not write things down, or require his students to repeat his ideas, but instead he concent rated on helping people to formulate their own ideas. He taught a method of arguing that led people into illogical conclusions, so that they could learn about how to think and argue. This necessarily brought Socrates and his students into conflict with people who had high status and authority. Dââ¬â¢Amato (1975, p. 1082) explains that the type of radical training that Socrates offered was perceived as a way of encouraging young citizens to challenge their elders. This was frowned upon because it caused embarrassment when these supposedly clever elders did not have the counter-arguments to defeat their younger critics. It seems, then, that Athenian society was not ready for the wit and courage that the young people acquired from Socrates, and that this was one of the main reasons why he was brought to trial. Young people were expected to defer to the wisdom of their elders, and to adhere to the long traditions of the city, whereas Socrates was perceived as a disturbing element who threatened to upset the natural order. The second charge relating to the way that Socrates allegedly did not adhere to the worship of the gods of the city suggests that there was a fundamental issue in the teachings of the philosopher which ran counter to the prevailing ideology of the city. Socrates attempts to clarify whether he is being accused of atheism (Plato, 2000, p. 29) which he denies, or of teaching students to worship a wider range of gods than the ones preferred in Athenian society. It is confirmed that Meletus accuses him of ââ¬Å"impietyâ⬠(Plato, 2000, p 37) which implies a denial of the existence of the gods altogether as well as bad behaviour resulting from this alleged lack of respect for the traditional gods. This accusation reveals that it is the practice of philosophy itself which is perceived by the authorities as a crime. Socrates argues that here have been many different gods in Greek history, and many different thinkers have suggested a myriad outlan dish ideas which do not necessarily fit exactly with prevailing opinion (Plato, 2000, pp. 9-10). The dialogues which Plato records show Socrates as a man concerned precisely with ââ¬Å"moral virtues like justice, courage, moderation and wisdom (the four ââ¬Å"cardinal virtuesâ⬠of the Ancient Greeks)â⬠(Roochnik, 2004, p. 82). By bringing these matters into a debate, he suggests that the truth is not yet truly known about them, and this in turn can be interpreted as a criticism of the prevailing customs and habits in the world around him. Greek society was not perfect by any means, and Socrates was trying to encourage reflection, rather than promoting immoral conduct. Socrates taught more than just the obedience to the laws and traditions of Athenian society, or literal belief in every point of the old stories about the gods. He wanted his students to think about what it actually meant to lead a virtuous life and to turn that theoretical knowledge in to practice by chang ing the way that

Hr in Action Case Incident Essay Example for Free
Hr in Action Case Incident Essay 1.Mr. Fisher made a number of mistakes, the first being his trying to set up and run a company in the American way. He did not investigate the local laws and cultures to see what, if any differences there would be in areas of sales and employment. He did not consider local taxing rules where foreigners have to have special visas and taxes are paid to maintain and keep those visas. He obviously does not understand that the cultural attitudes toward work are not the same as in the United States. The walk about person is not unusual and should not be dismissed out of hand. The laws in Germany are very different and very clear, so not educating himself on these issues was a bad move. 2.He should have gone through local agencies to receive guidance on the laws of employment and the hiring of employees. By turning over the hiring job, with his final approval, to professionals in the local market, he may have attracted more viable candidates. Additionally, in many areas, finding a job in the paper is not the way professionals work. Using expatriates is good, but only if you are aware of local laws concerning them and use them in the appropriate manner. Even an expatriate may have had better luck in the hiring process. Also, being out of country is difficult at best and not compensating for time and needs is one way to lose valuable employees. Situations of rental property, differences in pricing and exchange rates, issues such as family and insurance and health care are all part of having expatriates. The company HR must be prepared to deal with these issues and concerns before the person is sent overseas, preferably with some training in local cultures and needs of the community they are going to work in. 3.At this point, he should contact the best local employment firms and tell them the problems he has had, what the needs of the company and the employees are, and seek their guidance in correcting the problems that have been created. He should listen to their guidance and use his own research to come up with a firm HR plan to meet the company needs and then convey that to the employment firm, the employees from the United States, and the local employees, so everyone has the same plan of action and knowledge of what the company expects. A Standard Operating Procedure manual would not hurt here as well.

The Relationship Between Food Concentration, And Respiratory Activity :: essays research papers fc
The Relationship Between Food Concentration, and Respiratory Activity In this experiment different concentrations of sucrose were tested to determine which leads to the most respiratory activity in yeast. Yeast is a heterotrophic anaerobic fungus which lacks chlorophyll. Yeast is used commercially to ferment the sugars of wheat, barley, and corn to produce alcohol, and in the baking industry to raise or expand dough. Yeast or alcoholic fermentation is the anaerobic process of respiration by which sugars, such as glucose and sucrose, are converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide (CO2 ). This process is illustrated in the following equation: yeast C12H22O11 + H2O ---> 4 CH3CH2OH + 4 CO2 sucrose + water (yields) ethanol + carbon dioxide à à à à à In order to determine what concentration of sucrose and water leads to the most respiratory activity, ten large test tubes were set with different concentrations by the process of serial dilution. The first test tube was filled with 40 ml of 60% sucrose solution. Then, the nine remaining test tubes were serially diluted, so that the sucrose concentration ranged from 30% to 0.12%. à à à à à The hypothesis in this expriment was that the most respiratory activity would take place with 60% sucrose concentration. Since yeast fermentation requires sucrose and water, aproximately equal proportions of both would yield to the most respiratory activity. à à à à à Once the sucrose concentration was serially cut to the desired level, the experimenter added 5 ml of yeast suspension to each one of the ten test tubes. à à à à à Then, ten small test tubes were placed invertedly into each one of the large test tubes, making sure no air bubbles remained within the small tibes. à à à à à The test tubes were left 24 hours, allowing for fermentation to take place. But, no respiratory activity was detected. à à à à à In previous experimentation, it was found that yeast fermentation did take place in different molasses concentrations. Since, molasses contains large quantities of sucrose, it was assumed that different concentrations of

Often they need heavy investment to sustain their growth. Eventually their growth will slow and, assuming they maintain their relative market share, will become cash cows. ââ¬Å"TIDE sachet has high market demand & high market growth in the countryâ⬠Cash COWS: Cash cows are low-growth businesses or products with a relatively high market share. Atlantis
Atlantis is the subject of a legend about an advanced island civilization that was destroyed or lost. I believe Atantis is located in Bolivia based on historical evidence, advanaced architecture, advanced adimttance to road systems, and clues found in the text Critias written by the ancient Greek philospher Plato. The historical evidence in Bolivia and Atalantis match up because both civilizations were wealth, and had advanced architectual buildings. ââ¬Å"There is historical evidence they usesd advances architectural and agricultural techniquesâ⬠¦ (http://boliviabella. com/history. html). In Critias:â⬠â⬠¦ they had such an amount of wealthâ⬠¦ and they were furnished with everything which they needed, both in the city and countryâ⬠(paragraph 14). Having a great amount of wealth means the city was ran under a ruler that controlled the city, which had advanced more then other civilizations due to the amount of control the ruler had. The wealth of Atantis and Bolivia are a factor to its architecture. Both civilizations had similar advanced architecture from the materials the building were built from. In Critias:â⬠All the outside of the temple, with the exception of the pinnacles, they covered with silver, and the pinnacles with goldâ⬠(paragraph 16). ââ¬Å"Modern satellite mapping shows the plain, now called the Altiplano to be of rectangular configuration, perfectly level, enclosed on all sides by mountains and these mountains contained the metals which Plato told us about, namely gold, silver, copper, tin and the mysterious Orichalcumâ⬠(an alloy of gold and copper which occurs only in the Andes) and which Plato said were used to plate the walls of the circular city. The words ââ¬Å"Atlâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Antisâ⬠are themselves of native America origins meaning ââ¬Å"waterâ⬠and ââ¬Å"copperâ⬠respectively and the plain is subject to earthquakes and floods such as Plato said sank the city in a single day and night of rainfallâ⬠(http://www. atlantisbolivia. org/atlantisboliviapart1. htm). The two qoutes show that both had acces to the same materials that were used for various reasons like architecture. The civilaztion was so advanced that they had a road stystem and other things we use today like bridges. ââ¬Å"They created a system of roads, aqueducts and hanging bridges, some of which still exist todayâ⬠(http://www. oliviabella. com/history. html). In Critias:â⬠First of all they bridged over the zones of sea which surrounded the ancient metropolis, making a road to and from the royal palaceâ⬠(paragraph 15). This qoute proves that Atlantis had bridges and roads which Bolivia also had early on in their civilazation. In conclusion, I believe that Atlantis is located in Bolivia based on historical evidence, advanced architecture, and advanced admittance to road systems. Clues provided by Plato in Critias his historical account of Atlantis were also found in Bolivia, that helped me lead to the conclusion that Bolivia is where Atlantis existed.

Soliloquies of Hamlet
Soliloquies of Hamlet The Soliloquies of HamletAuthors use various literary elements to give insightinto the mental composition of their characters. InShakespeare's "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark," we can traceHamlet's mental process through his soliloquies.Hamlet's first soliloquy reveals him to be thoroughlydisgusted with Gertrude, Claudius, and the world in general."How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable, seem to me all theuses of this world" (1284), he said. He is saddened by thedeath of his father, who he admired as a king and husband tohis mother. His grief over his father's death iscompounded by his mother's hasty marriage to Claudius.Hamlet protests, "a beast, that wants discourse of reason, would have mourn'd longer" (1285). The worst part is thathe cannot tell them how he feels. In his second soliloquy, Hamlet becomes curious andsuspicious after hearing of the ghost. "My father's spiritin arms! All is not well; I doubt some foul play" (1287),he said.HamletHamlet feels that the presence of the ghostin dicates that his father died due to dubious circumstance. After talking with his father's ghost, in the 3rdSoliloquy Hamlet is angered by the news that Claudius hadmurdered his father. Hamlet assures that he will think ofnothing but revenge. "I'll wipe away all trivial fondrecords...and thy commandment all alone shall live withinthe book and volume of my brain" (1296), he proclaims. In Hamlet's fourth soliloquy, his mental state showssigns of declination. He castigates himself for not takingaction to avenge his father. He realizes that he has causeto kill Claudius, but cannot muster the chutzpah to gothrough with it. He said, "Why, what an ass am I! This ismost brave, that I...must, like a whore, unpack my heart...

Audit Industry Report - Airlines Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Audit Industry Report - Airlines - Essay Example As a comparison between two airlines, higher performance may just not be a measure of a better unit revenue as for many, the airliner may be facing a higher unit cost in contrast to others operating within the same industry. In parallel to all these factors, capital available for growth or horizontal and vertical integration of services is also a key factor to the industryââ¬â¢s long term success (Taneja, 1987). Many successful airliners may have to prefer long term gains and profits to measure their success and would plan to expand or integrate over a longer period of time. Apart from the focus on these direct factors that influence investment, there are several other key factors that play a turning role in raising capital for the airline industry and more focus is placed on international expansion. To wage international expansion into the equity of an airline, a risk assessment factor has to be incorporated in the financial sheet of the airlines in such a way that it has to reflect more associated risks such as currency risks or political risks. These forms of risks are more appropriate

Health Status and Health Care Services of Canada v. United States - Assignment Example At the same time, the health system in Canada has customarily been celebrated as one of the best globally, as it focuses on ensuring universal health coverage, thereby prioritizing those in need of health services to those who can pay (NCHS, 2004). This project aims to provide more insight on the status of healthcare in both the United States and Canada, particularly by looking at the similarities and differences between the two organizations, as well as their accessibility, affordability, and availability. Demographic Characteristics: Several surveys carried out in the past have reported that whites are healthier in both the United States and Canada than any other population. This hypothesis is essentially because a substantial percentage of whites have access to decent health coverage as compared to minority populations in both nations (WHO, 2005). Additionally, the fact that the minority populations in both nations tend to suffer and die from chronic conditions corroborates this proposition. Concerning gender, it has been ascertained that women in both USA and Canada are healthier than their male counterparts partly because they tend to take great care of themselves and that they have healthy habits given that they control the amount of products such as alcohol and nicotine they consume. In like manner, it has been established that married couples in both countries are healthy than the divorced and widowed (WHO, 2005). This can majorly be attributed to the fact that couples often lo ok out for each other. High income earners in both the United States and Canada are often considered healthier than the low income earners, as they can easily sign up for health covers that come in handy in ensuring that they seek medical attention on a regular basis. Infant mortality data and causes: It is imperative to note that infant mortality is low in both USA and Canada, suggesting that
